Ten Spirits 十神 (5) - Wealth

Wealth is what belongs to you. Anything that is under your control is your wealth. Do not take it as just money or your asset. It includes people under your control and even situation under your control. In the old days in China, husband and wife relationship is also a control-and-being-controlled one. Therefore, Proper Power is the husband of a woman while Proper Wealth is the wife of a man.

正財 - Proper Wealth. The narrower meaning is money made by proper means. You work and therefore deserve to be paid. In the broader sense, whatever that is under your control because of your effort is Proper Wealth. For a man, a legally married wife is his Proper Wealth.

偏財 - Unbecoming Wealth. The narrower meaning refers to money made not by proper effort. For example, money won by gambling is considered not made by your hard work and is therefore not proper wealth. It also includes money made by running a business that is not considered proper from an ethical point of view. In the old days in China, a man could have more that one wife. Apart from the first wife, the others were known as concubines. Concubines are represented by Unbecoming Wealth.

In the modern world we have to be careful to consider what is Proper Wealth and what is Unbecoming Wealth with some flexibility.

Ten Spirits 十神 (4) - Output

Output is what comes out from a person. This includes the children of a woman, production by a person, ideas and verbal or written work. If the yin and yang of the spirit is the same as that of the Day Master, it is considered more truthful representation of the person. If the output has opposite yin/yang as the Day Master, it is considered revolutionary. The original Chinese terms are quite inspiring.

食神 - Gracious Output. The meaning of the Chinese term is a spirit that feeds on the person. When a person is full of ideas, he feels frustrated if he is not having the opportunity to express his ideas. This is the same as a mother with a new born baby. When her breasts are full of milk, she needs her baby to feed on her to release the pressure and feel relieved and happy. The baby is the spirit that helps her to release her mother love through breast feeding. Gracious Output has the same yin and yang polarity as the Day Master. It is his truthful expression and production. The more knowledgeable a person is, the more opportunity seeking is he to find satisfaction. The more resource to support a person, the more he needs output to show his productivity. 

傷官 - Drastic Output. The meaning of the Chinese Term is to hurt the officer. That means it hurts your Power Spirit. It has the same yin-yang polarity as Proper Power and there is a likelihood that it clashes the Proper Power. This spirit may therefore be detrimental to his power or fame. For a woman, it may also hurt her husband. Well, what are the good points of this spirit? It represents unorthodox ideas and  the person is considered rebellious or at least usually going against  tradition and the established rules. The person tends to be inventive and his production is ahead of the time. Isn't it great?

Again, the entire chart must be examined with care and do not jump to conclusion once you find a spirit in the chart.

Ten Spirits 十神 (3) - Parallels

When a spirit is of the same element as the Day Master, it is considered parallel to the Day Master.The original names of the spirits that are parallel to the Day Master are actually more inspiring than the term "Parallels".

比肩 - Shoulder to Shoulder. It refers to a stem that is the same as the Day Master. It represents a person who works shoulder to shoulder with the Day Master. This includes friends with the same belief working for the same goal. The original term "Shoulder to Shoulder" is actually better than the translated term "Friendly Parallel".

劫財 - Robber of Wealth. It refers to a stem of the same element but opposite in yin/yang as the Day Master. The translated term "Unfriendly Parallel" has a broader sense that includes someone who pretends to be a friend or even a partner in business but actually is a traitor going after money and position. 

When we analyse a chart, never take it rigidly that a friendly parallel is always friendly and that an unfriendly parallel is always robbing your money. The quality of the chart can overrule the suggestion by the names.  Come to think about this: which is better, a lot of incapable people working shoulder to shoulder with you making negligible profit, or one very capable person who works for you requiring a lion's share of the huge profit made?

Ten Spirits 十神 (2) - Resource

The Chinese term is 印 (Yin) which is the seal of authority. In the old days, when someone was assigned an important government post, the emperor would give this person a seal of authority to act on his behalf. This seal offers support to whatever the person does on behalf of the emperor. It makes him strong.

Of course, to be able to get the seal, one must become famous to attract the attention of the emperor. The easiest (and hard) way was to pass the imperial examination with flying colors. The world today has changed a lot. That is why the term is translated as Resource which is an ingredient to support a person. This can be financial resource that comes from his parents. It can also be support from his boss to perform his duties with authority. 

正印 - Proper Resource covers a person's support from his parents in his earlier days, and his boss when he works in a company. If he is self-employed, he can get resource from financial institutes and also his clients. In a democratic country today, the head of state has his authority sourcing from the citizens who are his boss. Without such support by winning an election, he cannot be the president or the prime minister. Proper resource also covers a person's knowledge that is his main support in life. 

偏印 - Unbecoming Resource is support that is acquired through a more or less improper channel. For example, a person can win an election by lies to please the people to become his supporters. He can make promises with no intention to keep. Such behavior can be extended to our everyday lives when we want to gain support from our superiors. Unbecoming Resource is also known as The Wicked God of the Owl 梟神. It will be dealt with later.

It is the way the support comes to a person that distinguishes between the two types of resource. Even in the old days, a government post can be obtained through bribery just like what is happening in countries where corruption is part of daily life. In short you can easily distinguish the two by examining the harmony or disharmony generated.

Ten Spirits 十神 (1) - Power

Ten Spirits 十神 are the most important ingredients in the study of Four Pillars of Destiny 四柱命理學. The four pillars consist of a stem and a branch in each with a total of eight words BaZi 八字. The term BaZi is used by the less intellectual people while the term Four Pillars is used in the academic field. 

Each stem represents a spirit while each branch has a major spirit together with or without minor spirits embedded. The spirits in a branch determine how much support the spirits on the stems can get. It affects the capability of the spirits on the stems. 

In this series I am going to explain the translated terms of the ten spirits. 

正官 - Proper Power. 官 is an officer but when this spirit is related to just anyone, it is the term power that is more appropriate. The adjective "proper" describes the fact that this spirit has a yin-yang balance with the person. This spirit brings fame and power to the person. For a female, it also represents her husband.

偏官 - Unbecoming Power. Usually this spirit also brings power but the way it comes may not be proper due to the fact that there is no yin-yang harmony. It can be more powerful than Proper Power because it has more fighting spirit. For a woman, it also represents her husband but there is inevitably disharmony in the relationship.

Yang Gong Feng Shui

Last night, in my dream, I met an old man whom I might have seen in pictures of ancient books. He smiled at me, "Yang Gong, during his retirement, watched the yin and yang qi  楊公飬老看雌雄 Hahaha!" I approached him and bowed. He held my hand and said, "You have been thinking of me and that is why I come to meet you." I opened my mouth but could not say anything.

He padded my shoulder and said, "I know you are upset with people using my name to charge suckers obscene amount of money for something rubbish." I looked at him and wondered how did he know all this.

"Well, take it easy," he continued, "Only stupid people are cheated and they deserve to be victims. Don't worry about the good and clever people."

I could not talk but in my mind I wanted to ask why he was not worried about these people smearing his name by claiming to be his lineage holders.

"Never mind," He said in a calm voice, "people will know that my nick name is Yang Saving the Poor and not Yang Billionaire Manufacturer. I used Feng Shui to help the poor people to benefit from the stars so that they gained confidence and skill to make a living. This is what Feng Shui is about. It does not bring tremendous wealth to people without their honesty and effort."

I was about to ask him about whether it is true that the Emperors' tombs in the Song, Ming and Qing Dynasties were designed according to his teaching. He smiled and said, "Good Feng Shui is for the living. If a grave site has good Feng Shui, it needs the descendants to frequent the site and bathe in the qi to get the benefit. That is the core theory of my teaching. All the imperial graves and palaces were not built according to my Feng Shui technique. It is easy to see how each Dynasty deteriorated rapidly after the first few emperors."

I was like seeing lightning and thunder in my mind and woke up. Please share my dream and the true teaching of Yang Gong.

Casually writing something about divination

Forecast and prediction are actually the same - to tell what is likely to happen in the future based on information available. It depends on the accuracy of the information in hand and the ability of the forecaster/predictor to draw a conclusion after his analysis. For example, weather forecast is based on correlated meteorological observations analyzed by trained professionals to arrive at a logical conclusion.

Divination is the process of a diviner (someone who possesses or claims to possess supernatural abilities) communicating with a spiritual realm to see a picture based on which he can tell what he expects to see in the future. There are countless ways of performing divination. Some of the ways are not methodical. Some others have been formulated to employ a logical system to get a picture by an interpretation of the picture to tell a probable future event based on other known factors affecting the outcome.

The ability to divine depends on (1) the knowledge, (2) the understanding, (3) the last and perhaps the most important, inspiration of the diviner. Inspiration is the reception of messages from the supernatural world. If one does not believe in the existence of a supernatural world, then he is not qualified to be a diviner. Divination should be equivalent to "bullshit" in his dictionary. He should avoid this word to come from his mouth.

There are many classes of diviners. The lowest class consists of people who robotically get a chart from a software and then copy from a textbook all the implications in the chart. If you attend a short  (probably very expensive) course and then comfort yourself with the certificate signed by a "Master", then you belong to this class.

About QMDJ

Qi Men Dun Jia is the study of qi at a moment about certain things in the diviner's mind. It is to analyze the situation and offer strategy to make you a winner in the battle. It is not merely prediction. In fact, prediction is just to get a picture of what is coming. It does not foretell the outcome in the future as if it is written on a rock. The best you can say is that it is a picture of the future painted on sand that you can change it anytime to make it look better. So, don't use QMDJ to predict who wins (for example) the election in the US. If you are employed by one of the camps, you can use QMDJ to offer strategy to win. That is all. There are just too many abuses of this ancient art.

Mystifying Yin House Feng Shui is a Fraud

Feng Shui is just the technique of using beneficial qi in the Universe. It is about how to employ Heaven qi and Earth qi to help Human qi to work. The importance of yin house Feng Shui lies on the fact that Heaven qi and Earth qi intercourse more naturally and easily in the country side to give birth to the most powerful sheng qi. The art of yin house Feng Shui was known as the art of benevolence and filial duty 仁孝之術. It is not magic as marketed by a lot of fraudulent Feng Shui "masters" that if your ancestor is buried in a wonderful dragon's node 龍穴, then you will be rich and famous in no time.

The secret of yin house Feng Shui lies in the requirement of the descendants visiting the grave site every now and then. They must spend some time there to get the benefit of the sheng qi in the long xue. Merely burying the dead there is a waste of good Feng Shui. You have to be there frequently thinking about your ancestors there so that Heaven, Earth and Man qi can mingle well to help you.

Forget about the formulas invented in the past. They work but not to the extent the fraudulent "masters" claim. The most important ingredient is your presence there to get the qi. It is enough if you are present there and your feeling is good. That means the Feng Shui there is good for you.

If you understand this little article, you do not need to take any course and you will be better than those who have bought the title of Feng Shui Master after spending a few days to learn from a so-called Sifu.

A Memorable Day in London

Back in 2000, when I gave a seminar in UK, I got a temporary library card to visit the British Library. After the seminar, I went to the library. The librarian in charge of the Chinese reference books section was an old English gentleman. He asked me what particular books I wanted to read. I told him I wanted to do a little research on Shao Yong’s work. He took my business card and asked me to write my name in Chinese on it. I wrote:

He put his thumbs up, “What a good name!” He then wrote with beautiful calligraphy:

and asked, “Which way do you like me to address you?”

I looked into his eyes, which was blinking with wisdom and humor. We burst into silent laughter together.

“You must be a sinologist.” I said.

“No,” he shook his head with his grey hair almost dancing, “I am just a lover of Chinese culture. Sinologists are westerners who do research work on ancient Chinese the western way. I don’t like the flavor and that is why I am not one.”

“I love to enjoy Chinese culture through books, visiting China and communicate with Chinese scholars.” He added.

He then showed me my seat and asked me to visit other places of the library, “Come back in 1 hour, and the books you want will be on your desk. We have the complete Si Ku Quan Shu 四庫全書 and Shao Yong’s work is in the Zi section Shu Shu Category子部 術數類.”

 I was impressed as he did not have to go through any catalogue or computer. It was all in his mind.

Fake Feng Shui Classics

A famous Feng Shui master Kwan Fung Cheung (Cantonese) 關鳳翔 published an excellent book in 1971: The Principles of Kan Yu 堪輿學原理. In my opinion, it is the best Feng Shui book ever written. Here I will summarize the last section of Chapter 3 in this book.

The author categorized five types of fake Feng Shui books as follows:

[1]  Someone discovered truth about Feng Shui and believed that his ideas were better than those of his predecessors. However, since he was just an unknown small potato, no one would pay much attention to his discovery. Therefore, he published his book under the name of a famous Feng Shui master. Examples are (1) Challenging the Dragon Classic 撼龍經 (2) Suspecting the Dragon 疑龍經  (3) Song of Formulation Leaking Heaven’s Way     天機入式歌  (4) The Precise Theory of Spiritual Castle 靈城精義. These are all valuable Feng Shui books but the authors were people who did not have a big name. Therefore, famous people were used to name the authors of the books. (1) and (2) were assigned to Yang Yun Song 楊筠松. (3) was assigned to Liao Yu 廖瑀. (4) was assigned to He Ling Tong 何令通.

   [2]  A good book was written by an anonymous author. Some nosey parker assigned the name of a famous master to be the author of the book. For example, Guo Pu 郭璞 was assigned to be the author of the celebrated Burial Book 葬書.

   [3]  Classic of the Green Bag 青囊經 was non-existent meaning there was no such book at all. In the Burial Book, this sentence appears 15 times: The Classic says, “……”.  There was a fake book written after the Tang Dynasty by an unknown author. It was assigned the title Burial Classic 葬經 with author Qing Wu Zi 青烏子.  The title of the book was later changed to Classic of the Green Bag 青囊經.

   [4]   Some very good books were written by scholars. However, they had a much higher social ranking than Feng Shui masters. They were ashamed of disclosing the fact that they were good in this art. Therefore, they employed the name of Feng Shui masters who lived generations before to be the authors of the books. For example, Snow Heart Song 雪心賦 is such a book.

   [5]   Some books were written in unintelligible language because the author was an uneducated person. An example of this type is Heaven Jade Classic 天玉經. It was a book written by some follower of the Daoist Religion. The structure and style of writing can be described best as gibberish. It was taken as concealing secrets of Feng Shui as the terms like Xuan Kong and Aixing can be found in the book. However, this book has nothing to do with Feng Shui of graves or houses at all. Later, charlatans used this book to teach whatever they wanted in different ways. They all claimed to have the uniquely passed down secrets with weird annotations.

Well, most people in the field of Feng Shui would disagree to particularly #5. They would say that the book has the topmost secrets concealed and without a genuine lineage, no matter how clever you are, you simply cannot decode the secrets. I can only wish them good luck to continue live in their dream world.

It must be noted that what Master Kwan listed are only the more obvious fake books. Feng Shui is actually a very rigorous subject based on observation and logical deduction. The only thing that prevents Feng Shui from becoming a science is the Man part of Cosmic Trinity because two different persons can react differently to the same qi.

If anyone sells you courses with wild claims of lineage, just forget it. 

What is Qi Men Dun Jia? (1)

Qi Men Dun Jia has suddenly become a hot subject and a lot of different teachings sprout out like Spring bamboo shoots after the rain 雨後春笋. I will first introduce the first stanza of the famous  Song of the Old Fisherman on the Misty Waters 煙波釣叟歌 in my blog.

Face Reading (Mian Xiang 面相)

A lot of people ask me whether I teach Face Reading. The answer is "No!"

I do not teach anything I do not practice professionally. The reason why I do not practice this art professionally is because it is not my cup of tea. To my understanding, there is a physical part and a spiritual part of Face Reading. The physical part is black and white while the spiritual part relies a lot on your feeling. It is not easy to integrate them together. It doesn't mean I am against the study and practice of Face Reading. In fact, I encourage my students to learn this art from various sources. 

Recently practitioners of Feng Shui Research Center have compiled a Face Reading course. I helped them with understanding some teachings from ancient books. I do not want to take credit for my contribution. The course they developed is their joint effort with some suggestion of translation of terms from me.  

Sometimes when we read an ancient book, we must read it with a skeptical eye. This is particularly true when several people were involved in the editorial work over the centuries. There are obvious mistakes but unfortunately the mistakes are continuously passed on and spread by many authors of today. 

Officially I have developed Feng Shui courses, Destiny courses including Four Pillars and Zi Wei Dou Shu, and Divination courses including Plum Blossom Divination, Wen Wang Gua, Qi Men Dun Jia and Da Liu Ren. Qi Men Dun Jia is the study of qi at a particular time and is not really classified under divination. This I will explain later. Face Reading is a professional course developed by FSRC trained masters but it is not exactly an official FSRC course because it is not developed by myself. 

I have seen the work of these highly recommended masters and I am happy they can help people with their knowledge.

 

Da Liu Ren Correspondence Course

It is said: 學會大六壬，來人不用問 If you have mastered Da Liu Ren, the inquirer does not need to ask any question.

It may sound strange to a lot of people who have some knowledge about divination. If you do not ask, how can you get an answer?

In some elementary divination books, not only asking a question is a must, the way to ask the question is also quite rigid. For example, you cannot ask a question without a time frame. Once you have learned Wen Wang Gua, you know that the answer to a question has the timing automatically taken care of in the reading.

For example, if you go to a professional diviner, he will only need your birth year, month and day and also to choose what you like to know among: wealth 求財, relationship and marriage 姻縁, sickness 病 of (self, a family member or friend), career 事業, your home 家宅, or even vaquely all about yourself 自身.

The interpretation amazingly takes care of the time frame. It will tell you in details when something will happen. This is something a novice diviner cannot understand.

In the same way, a proficient Liu Ren 六壬 diviner or a QMDJ 奇門遁甲 diviner can give you the answer without you asking a
question. This is because both systems cover the picture of all the things in the present and the future transformations.

What is the difference between QMDJ and Liuren then? QMDJ was designed for warfare. If you are in the battle field, it is applicable. Someone says, "Life is a battle field." Well then, QMDJ will help you every battle of life. Liuren is about almost anything in life. QMDJ considers the four dimensional chart of Heaven 天, Earth 地, Man 人and Spirits 神. Liuren uses the interaction of the spirits of Tian Gan 天干 and Di Zhi 地支, the twelve Heaven Generals 天將 and various spirits 神煞.

QMDJ is not exactly divination as the chart is used to determine the Heaven Qi, Earth Qi, Doors (Man Qi) and Spirit Qi at a certain moment. That is why we can use QMDJ to study the qi at any moment to explain a lot in historical events. It is the actual analysis of qi to see what happens at a certain moment. The time taken is the local time of the location you are interested in.

Liu Ren, on the other hand, is purely divination although the chart is also based on the year, month, day and hour. The year, the month and the day account for the strength of various qi. The hour may be obtained in arbitray ways. For example, it can be observation of the altitude of the sun to guess what the hour is. It can be taken from the clock or watch even if it does not tell the correct time. It can even be taken by random picking one card from a deck of 12 cards pre-made to read the twelve Earth Branches. This is because Liu Ren is purely divination although the analysis pays a lot of attention
to the strengths of qi during the time the divination is done.

My QMDJ correspondence course was quite a success although the actual participants of webinars did not come close to 20% of
the total number of students. Most of the students just study from the recording videos with pdf manuscripts. The success was because some of my students have given very successful courses based on what they have learned in my course. In the Da Liu Ren correspondence course I will not use webinars. Instead, it will be in the form of ebooks with audio and video insertions. The course will be divided into three parts covered in 6 months but the private discussion group will run forever.

Part 1: Charting - detail explanation of how the 10 types of charts are drawn. Ultimately the students are expected to know how to draw all the 720 different charts free-handedly. This will give the student a solid background to study the other two parts.

Part 2: Elaboration of the various spirits. The useful spirits are no less than 30 but other minor spirits amount to several hundreds.

Part 3. Practical Case Studies. The first part will cover a lot of my own case studies that I did for clients in the past. The second part will be discussion of case studies supplied by students.

Liu Ren 六壬 (1)

When Wei Qian Li’s 韋千里 “Liu Ren Divination Lecture Notes 六壬占卜講義” was about to be published, he sent a copy to Yuan Shu Shan 袁樹珊 and asked for comment as well as a preface. Yuan was happy to welcome his book and wrote a very good preface introducing the study of Liu Ren.

Here is a summary of what he wrote.

  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.   Whatever we do, if we know what we are going to encounter and are well prepared, we will have a better rate of success.

    2.   Liu Ren study (I call this Liurenology) is the most ancient method of divination that preceded the Yijing but it embodies the fundamental concept of the Yijing.

    

    3.   From the time of divination to the Month General, it is equivalent to Taiji born from Wuji. ( 由占時而月將，是無極生太極也。)

    4.     From Month General to stems and branches, it is equivalent to Taiji giving birth to Binary Appearances. (由月將而干支，是太極生两儀也。)

    5.     From stems and branches to the four readings, it is like the birth of the four images of Tai Yang, Shao Yang, Tai Yin, Shao Yin. ( 由干支而四課，則太陽，少陽，太隂，四象生焉。)

    6.     The initial interpretation refers to Heaven, the middle interpretation refers to Man while the final interpretation refers to Earth. When the Cosmic Trinity is complete, the five elements are ready. The Spiritual Generals are determined.  (由四課而發用，初傳法天，中傳法人，末傳法地。三才既具，五行備焉，神將定焉。)

    7.     When the Spiritual Generals are established, the central mechanism is in your hands. Then among all things on earth under heaven, which are auspicious and which are inauspicious, which are regrettable and which cause blames to come, are all displayed before you. It is not just about success or failure, fortune or misfortune, glory or shame. ( 神將既定，握其樞機，則天下萬事萬物，孰吉孰凶，孰悔孰咎，胥於此現象得之，豈獨是非成敗，禍福榮辱已哉。)

In fact, we are part of the Universe and being a part, we can communicate with the whole. However, the communication is beyond our five senses. The communication is spiritual and not physical. Denouncing spirituality automatically denounces divination and vice versa. The entire Universe is a living entity. All other spirits are part of the Universe. This includes our spirit (or soul) and I don’t think anyone would denounce this. Then why the other parts of this paragraph?

Divination is just communication between the diviner’s spirit and other spirits. The method is a vehicle to bring the spirits together. Liu Ren is an excellent vehicle and to sell this vehicle our ancestors invented stories to say that the method was given to the Yellow Emperor 黄帝 by the Mysterious Lady of the Nine Heavens 九天玄女. In fact, Liu Ren was invented and improved over time by intelligent diviners.

Destiny Reading for John Doe (3)

It happens that Bill Gates has the same Four Pillars chart as John Doe. Can we see how the chart fits his life?

In this third article of the series I will employ some technical terms so that it is easier for people who have studied Four Pillars to follow more closely.

When we read a chart, the best way to understand it is to see how the qi moves about in relation to the Day Master. Here in this chart the Day Master is Ren 壬. Since we are talking about the life of a person, it is natural to talk about fame and fortune, intelligence, support, friends and enemies, his character and way of doing things. Well, one path of qi flow is from Yi乙 to Bing 丙 that clashes the Day Master. This path indicates how he uses his talents to create his productions that turns into money pouring onto him. Also note that Yi for Ren Day Master represents performance unrelated to what he learns from traditional education. To understand this path, we have to assess the level of his intelligence and how abundant is the wealth. Yi wood sits right on the storage tank Wei 未 of wood but it is born at Hai 亥 indicating he has great creativity and abundant ideas. This idea turns into products that sell well and it is important to make good use of the money that comes to him in a clash that may be damaging if there is no path to drain it away. The next part of the path is to see how the wealth qi goes down to the three branches Wei 未and Xu 戌. Wei and Xu are the qi of power that provide a path for the surplus wealth qi to go but at the same time these branches contain good source of wealth qi.
